Community meeting to address growing traffic concerns in Oldtown

Locals say traffic in the area is frequently at a standstill, with roads unable to cope with the current volume of vehicles

Residents of Oldtown and surrounding areas are being urged to attend a public meeting this Wednesday, September 3, at 7.30pm beside the Hideout Bar, Oldtown Road, to raise concerns over worsening traffic congestion.

The meeting, organised by Mary T Sweeney, Donegal's Aontú representative, on behalf of local residents, is calling for both short-term and long-term solutions to the daily gridlock that affects the town.

She said: "Schools are back and traffic chaos is worse around Letterkenny. Residents have approached me to generate the first of our community demonstrations regarding their frustration at the lack of concern by Donegal County Council and councillors in making any real active effort to address traffic congestion around our town."

Locals say traffic in the area is frequently at a standstill, with roads unable to cope with the current volume of vehicles. Concerns have also been raised for the safety of pedestrians, wheelchair users, and schoolchildren, while construction lorries continue to use the narrow, ageing Oldtown Bridge.

The frustration stems from what residents describe as decades of delays and inaction, with significant sums of money spent on public consultations and road plans that have yet to deliver results.

Organisers say the meeting offers locals a chance to “have your say on the day” and stress that the community “needs and deserves better than the daily stress of traffic chaos.”

For more information, residents can contact Mary T Sweeney on 087-6707002.
