Bishop Niall Coll was greeted by family members and other well-wishers following his announcement as the Bishop of Raphoe.
While the St Johnston native will formally be installed at a yet-to-be-decided later date, Bishop Coll - who is currently the Bishop of Ossory -has been unveiled as the man to lead the Diocese.
“It is with deep gratitude that I have been returned home to serve as the Bishop of Raphoe,” Bishop Coll told the congregation at St Eunan’s Cathedral, where his announcement was confirmed following Thursday morning Mass.
“It is the Diocese where I was born, baptised and ordained to the priesthood. To be called back to the people and place that first formed my faith is both humbling and deeply moving.”
His proud mother Kathleen and sisters Annemarie and Caitriona were among those present.
