Planning permission granted for Milford footpath on ‘very busy stretch of road’

The R245 between Lidl and Mulroy Woods Hotel

Planning Permission has been granted for the construction of a new footpath in Milford.

The footpath will stretch from Lidl and Mulroy Court to Mulroy Woods Hotel. The new shared-use pedestrian facility on the R245 was brought forward by local Independent Councillor Declan Meehan and approved at the September Pleanery Meeting.

“This is a big issue in the town of Milford and a particular road safety issue along that very busy stretch of road,”  Cllr Declan Meehan said. “There's a high number of pedestrians using that stretch of road who are walking on the verge at the moment, in an unsafe manner.

“It is fantastic that the roads team have come up with this plan and I've also already secured €125,000 towards the commencement of that construction under the Community Recognition Fund. I’ll be hoping that we will secure the rest of the money that's needed for this and over the course of 2026.

“This is an issue that has been raised a lot in Milford and to see the council have responded in such a way, this is a good day.”

The project will include: Provision of a pedestrian facility on the western verge of the existing R245 regional road; Provision of appropriate road crossing (uncontrolled); Provision of upgraded public street lighting within the urban scheme extents; Provision of all appropriate drainage, earthworks, road marking and road signage for the project; Realignment of open drainage channels; All other ancillary and tie in works to TII and DMURS standards.
