Cllr Declan Meehan welcomed the HSE's commitment to Primary Care provision in Fanad
Independent Cllr Declan Meehan has welcomed confirmation from the Health Service Executive (HSE) that it remains fully committed to the continued provision of safe, appropriate and sustainable primary care services in Tamney, Fanad.
However, he has also stressed the need for investment in an upgraded primary healthcare centre.
The update was provided to Cllr Meehan at a HSE Regional Health Forum meeting in Galway on Tuesday this week, following representations he made regarding the future of primary care accommodation in the area.
In its response, the HSE confirmed that a structured review of the existing accommodation in Tamney is currently underway. The review is being carried out by HSE Capital and Estates in conjunction with Property, Maintenance and Primary Care Service leads. It will assess the building’s suitability, capacity and compliance with current service requirements, with associated recommendations expected to be completed in Q2.
Welcoming the update, Cllr Meehan said: “I am very encouraged by the clear commitment from the HSE to maintaining and strengthening primary care services in Fanad. Local families depend on accessible, high-quality healthcare, and it is vital that facilities are fit for purpose both now and into the future.
“The reality is, however, that current facilities and accommodation are not fit for purpose. Accessibility is a huge issue in Tamney, as is the basic provision of clinical space for all members of the primary care team. The confirmation that a structured review is underway is an important step. I will be seeking to ensure that this process moves forward without delay and that the outcome delivers a long-term solution for the people of Fanad. The building needs significant investment as soon as possible to ensure as much healthcare as possible can be delivered locally in the community.”

"The current lack of available space has already seen services lost in Fanad including dietetics. Mental health, speech and language, and other primary care professionals cannot see patients in Fanad because of the lack of clinic space. This isn't good enough and the people of Fanad deserve the same access to primary care services close to home, in line with Sláintecare", Cllr Meehan said.
The HSE further confirmed that, subject to the findings of the internal review, a business case will be developed to determine the most appropriate solution for the area.
Cllr Meehan confirmed that he will continue to monitor developments closely and will provide further updates to the community as the review and subsequent business case process advances.
