European champion Roisin Hegarty
Councillors in the Letterkenny-Milford Municipal District have given unanimous support to holding a mayoral reception for champion boxer Roisin Hegarty.
Roisin, aged 14, already has a remarkable list of championship wins and medals to her name. Her inspiring achievements led 100% Redress Councillor Tómas Seán Devine to propose a formal honour from the local authority in Letterkenny.
Cllr Devine outlined how Roisin, of Twin Towns Boxing Club, is a five-time Irish champion.
Last year, the Loreto Secondary School student made history when she defeated Ukraine’s Tetiana Zvenihorodska to claim the U15 European gold medal at 63kg in Montenegro, becoming the first Donegal female boxer to win a European title.
She also holds five North West titles and five Ulster titles and picked up the Youth Award at the recent Donegal Sports Star Awards 2025.

She was also shortlisted for the Young Sportswoman of the Year Award 2026 at the Local Women in Sport Awards, held last weekend in Belfast.
“This young girl has experienced so much for her age, and she is an inspiration to many young people,” said Cllr Devine today.
“It’s only right that this MD recognise her for her achievements.”
Independent Councillor Michael McBride, who seconded the motion, said he met Roisin’s father, Raymond, last Friday and found him to be very modest about her huge list of achievements.
“I hope Roisin takes him to every corner of the world, because the world is her oyster at the minute," said Cllr McBride.
“It’s great to see people born and raised in our home community achieve at this level.”
Mayor of Letterkenny Ciaran Brogan added that Roisin “has been a credit to herself and her family, and I’m sure all her family is very proud.”
A date for the event will be agreed in due course.
