John Wilkie clears 9 bags of rubbish from scenic Letterkenny road

John Wilkie clears 9 bags of rubbish of one Letterkenny road

A Letterkenny Tidy Town's volunteer has said one of Letterkenny's most scenic roads is being destroyed by people dumping their rubbish on it.

Last weekend, the Letterkenny man cleared nine bags of heavy rubbish from it and he says another four bags could still be lifted.

John got involved in the Letterkenny Tidy Town committee around 2007.

"It is the worst kept road I have ever seen in my life," he said.

The road he is referring to is a turn-off to the left after you pass Letterkenny University Hospital on the way to the Mountain Top. The road is incredibly scenic with trees on either side, in places.

"I found type-writers, printers, mops, bags of ashes, nappies, bottles of wine and lots of other stuff. It is a place where people dump because they cannot be seen," he said, adding that people probably do so at night under the cover of darkness.

The well-intentioned volunteer cleared twelve bags from the road at Christmas.

"From Killylastin right down to the bottom of the road - so, that is a lot," he said.

He said that bottles and cans can be recycled.

Volunteers from the Letterkenny Tidy Town committee cleared the dual carriageway during the pandemic and got a couple of hundred bags, between February to September or October.
