Work remains ongoing on the Four Lane project
A proposal has been tabled to have the new Four Lane road in Letterkenny named after Tommy Murphy.
Mr Murphy, a businessman who lives on the road, has had a huge impact on the local community.
At this month’s meeting of the Letterkenny-Milford Municipal District, Councillor Donal Coyle proposed that the new Four Lane road be named in Mr Murphy’s honour.
“For what he achieved in his lifetime,” Councillor Coyle mentioned.
“Timmy started off as a plumber and he was self-taught. Eventually, he set up a plumbing business and he took on apprentices. Many’s the plumber who could say he learned the trade from working with Tommy.
“Tommy moved onto plant hire and built up a huge business. Alongside that, he started a scaffolding business and worked alongside contractors.”
Councillor Coyle said Mr Murphy’s scaffold business had been involved in to huge projects in Letterkenny - putting scaffolding up on the chimneys of the old Unifi building and at St Eunan’s Cathedral.
Councillor Coyle highlighted Mr Murphy’s generosity in donating, free of charge, a field to Bonagee United who used the land for 20 years to play Ulster Senior League, Donegal League and Donegal Schoolboys League football.
He said it would be ‘only right and fitting’ for the road to be named after Mr Murphy.
Councillor Coyle said: “He is living and working on what will be a great introduction for anyone coming into Letterkenny.”
Donegal County Council Official Seamus Canning told Councillor Coyle that approval would have to be sought first from Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) as the road, between the Polestar and Dry Arch roundabouts, is a national primary road.
