A Letterkenny Councillor has recalled a 'traumatic' sight recently when he feared children would be knocked down by a speeding motorist

A Donegal County Councillor recalled the 'traumatic' experience of fearing that a child would be knocked down as a van overtook another vehicle 'at full tilt' close to a crèche.

Councillor Kevin Bradley recalled the incident at Scribley on the Leck Road.

Councillor Bradley has called for Donegal County Council to erect a flashing speed sign at the location 'as a matter of emergency'.

“I was stopped and saw children crossing the road just past the crèche,” he told the March meeting of the Letterkenny-Milford Municipal District.

“A man passed out at full title. It sent shivers down my spine. Something has to be done sooner rather than later.

“Every Councillor must have had this motion in. When will the work be done? I was traumatic after seeing that. One more child on that road at the time and God knows what would have happened.

“That boy, in a Mercedes van, came flying down over the brow without a care.”

The motion was seconded by Councillor Gerry McMonagle, who added that residents along the road have expressed concerns for a long time.

“There are too many dips and rises on that road,” he said. “The sooner we get traffic calming, the better.”

Donegal County Council have liaised with An Garda Siochana regarding complaints of speeding on that stretch of road.

An allocation of €30,000 has been allocated to the Leck road as part of the Department of Transport funding allocations for road safety schemes

“The road safety section are current designing a safety scheme that is within this budget,” Donegal County Council said in response to Councillor Bradley's motion.
