A safety review is underway of a busy junction in Kilmacrennan that has become notorious for the amount of road traffic accidents.

Donegal County Council have confirmed that they will be replacing all safety bollards at the crossroads in Kilmacrennan.

There have been several bad accidents at the junction, on the main N56 road. Footage of many close calls have circulated and there are calls for additional safety measures.

Kilmacrennan-based Councillor John O’Donnell brought a motion to the Letterkenny-Milford Municipal District, asking that signage be increased as well as the replacement of the bollards.

The local authority, in response, said that, in conjunction with the road safety engineer, a review is being carried out to establish other safety improvements that can be made.

“There have been too many incidents,” Councillor O’Donnell told Tuesday’s meeting. “This is something that is within our own remit.

“We need a full upgrade, line marking and better signage coming from the Milford and Churchill directions after a number of incidents.”

Councillor Liam Blaney seconded the motion and added: “Most of us have seen the bad accidents at that junction. Drivers don’t see the signs and end up driving through the crossroads.”

Councillor O’Donnell pointed out a problem where parked vehicles can block the stop sign and suggested a pre-warning sign.
