Drew Corry, Rt Hon Trevor Mallard, Christine Corry, Kevin Shields and, inset right, former All Black captain Dave Gallaher, who was born in Ramelton
The Ambassador of New Zealand made his way to Ramelton late last month to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the birth of legendary All Blacks captain Dave Gallaher.
Born in Ramelton on October 30, 1873, Gallaher left these shores to settle in Katikati, New Zealand. He enjoyed a glittering career as an All Blacks player and selector secured his legacy as one of the all-time sporting greats.
Trevor Mallard marked the occasion by visiting Ramelton as a guest of the Dave Gallaher Society. He thanked the society for keeping alive the legacy of Dave Gallaher. President of the society, Kevin Shields, thanked the New Zealand Embassy for its continued support.
Trevor visited Drew and Christine Corry at Crammond House - the birthplace of Gallaher - and The Dave Gallaher Park before dinner and refreshments at The Bridge Bar. Gallaher died in 1917 during the battle of Passchendaele during World War One.
