Call for review of Milford ramps

Donegal County Council has urged to review the height of ramps on Milford main street.

The council has also been asked to add extra pedestrian safety measures at busy crossings in the town.

The calls were made by Councillor Pauric McGarvey, who said the current ramps need to be raised and better lit for visibility.

"They are not fit for purpose, there is no bump and they are not slowing traffic down," Councillor McGarvey told the Letterkenny-Milford Municipal District meeting on Tuesday.

Councillor McGarvey said that local residents, concerned by the speed of traffic, are seeking more ramps, which have proven effective in other towns such as Cavan.

He asked the council to install a raised pedestrian ramp/crossing on the main street from the Maple Shop across to the entrance to the carpark and also to renew the ramp at the top of the town.

He added that a pedestrian crossing would be ideal for people crossing from Moyle road to the chapel and the Milford Health Centre.

He also asked that the road lining be redone, after witnessing a car going up main street from the Travellers' Inn junction.

Donegal County Council has agreed to review the ramp at the top of the town and carry out work if necessary.

The response from the Council said: ‘The pedestrian crossing at the Maple shop had been looked at previously as part of an active travel scheme but there were safety issues regarding the site lines and a parking bay was required on the upper side of the crossing’.
