Young people from communities across Donegal gathered at Planet Youth, Ballybofey, to celebrate the completion of the Unlocking Your Potential (UP) Project.
The project is a youth initiative delivered by Donegal Youth Service and supported under the IFI’s Personal Youth Development Programme (PYDP).
Launched in July 2021, the project was developed to address gaps in support for 16-25 year olds not in education, employment or training (NEET), many of whom face challenges such as mental health difficulties, substance misuse, homelessness or involvement with the justice system. The programme also works with young people from communities vulnerable to polarisation and paramilitary influence, helping build positive engagement and strengthen Good Relations.
Over the course of the programme, UP supported 37 young people from Letterkenny, Ballybofey, Stranorlar, Raphoe, Convoy, Manorcunningham, Milford, Buncrana, Ballyshannon, Donegal Town, Killygordon and surrounding areas. The project provided intensive one-to-one support, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Good Relations workshops, personal development, and tailored pathways into education, training, or employment. A core feature of the work has been meeting the needs of each young person individually, offering long-term and consistent support for those dealing with trauma, instability, or limited engagement with statutory services.
Shona McCarthy, Chair of International Fund for Ireland, said: “The Unlocking Your Potential Project demonstrates the real difference that dedicated support and guidance can make in young people’s lives. By helping participants build confidence, resilience, and skills for education, training, and employment, the project not only empowers individuals but also contributes to stronger, more connected communities. We are proud to see the positive impact this initiative is having and the opportunities it is opening for young people across Donegal.”

Charlene Logue, Line Manager at Donegal Youth Service, added: “Watching these young people grow in confidence, resilience, and independence has been incredibly rewarding. Projects like Unlocking Your Potential make a real difference in their lives, helping them overcome challenges and take their first steps toward education, training, or employment. This work shows just how much can be achieved when we invest in young people.”
