Cllr Patrick McGowan has asked for a pedestrian crossing to link two car parks in Ballybofey

A councillor has called on Donegal County Council to provide more pedestrian crossings in the Twin Towns.

Cllr Patrick McGowan raised the issue at January’s meeting of the Lifford-Stranorlar Municipal District (MD).

“It was agreed previously to have a new pedestrian crossing from McElhinney’s Car Park to the Heath Board car park, across Chestnut Road,” he said. “This is a very dangerous crossing and people are taking their lives in their hands there. This work was agreed, but no designs were ever done.”

Cllr McGowan also called for the installation of a crossing at the bottom of Golf Course Road in Stranorlar, on the main N15 Lifford road, as well as traffic-calming measures at Ard Miran Park on the Letterkenny road.

He described the situation there as an ‘absolute disgrace’, adding that street lighting in the two towns was very poor. Cllr McGowan also called for the back road from Ballybofey to Crossroads village to be upgraded to a regional road due to the volume of heavy traffic using it.

Meanwhile, Cllr Martin Scanlon claimed the road below Glenfin Chapel needs to be resurfaced again, just six months after being tarred. Council staff said they would get reports on the issues raised.
