Planning permission granted for more than 800 homes in Donegal last year

Nationally the figures show a drop in the number of planning permissions granted for dwelling units compared to the year before

Planning permission was granted for more than 800 homes in Donegal last year, figures show.

The latest figures from the Central Statistics Office (CSO) show planning was granted in the county for 731 houses and 73 apartments in the county, a total of 804. 

There were 317 permissions granted for other units, 341 extensions were granted and the go-ahead was given for 131 alterations and conversions.

The figures show planning permission was granted for 138 new dwellings in the county in the last quarter of last year out of a total of 339 permissions given the go-ahead. Ninety permissions were granted for other units in the last quarter of the year. Some 82 extensions were given the go-ahead as well as 28 alterations and conversions.

Nationally the figures show a drop in the number of planning permissions granted for dwelling units compared to the year before.

Shane O'Sullivan, statistician in the CSO’s business statistics division, said: “In 2022, the total number of dwelling units granted planning permission was 34,177, down 20.5% from 42,991 units in 2021. In quarter 4 (October, November, and December) 2022, the total number of dwelling units granted planning permission was 7,597, down 44% from 13,450 units in Q4 2021.”
