Cllr Patrick McGowan at the junction in Crossroads village
Motorists travelling through a crossroads in the Finn Valley village of Crossroads have been dealing with a 'Russian Roulette' scenario and it was only a matter of time before someone was seriously injured at this location.
It's ironic in that the village actually gets its name from the section of roadway that is proving quite dangerous.
The issue was highlighted by Cllr Patrick McGowan at today's (Monday) online meeting of the Lifford-Stranorlar Municipal District.
He outlined how there had been several accidents at the junction which served four busy roads in the area. He said many accidents had occurred and many near missed too. Some had been reported, others not but the general consensus in the area was it was time for a change before someone got really injured or worse.
Cllr McGowan, who is also cathaoirleach of the municipal district, said a roundabout was needed to replace the crossroads.
"This junction is far too dangerous. Each road has an equal right of access and this is leading to confusion with some drivers delaying, some stopping and others just carrying on through the junction.
"The stop signs are right on the junction too. If these were moved back and a roundabout installed, everyone would know who had the right of way. It's simple and doesn't take a degree to work this out. People locally are afraid that some drivers have had to ensure a Russian Roulette scenario while going through the village and that is not on in 2023."
The meeting was told a Donegal County Council safety engineer would examine the scene and report back on his proposal at their next meeting
