Update on Lifford Hospital plans could be revealed next month

Plans for the new purpose-built Lifford Community Hospital being proposed for a 3.5-acre site just outside the town will be the focus of attention at the Friends of Lifford Hospital annual general meeting next month.

The campaign for the provision of a proper community hospital facility has been going on for decades with many false dawns and disappointments including political and medical spanners thrown into the work but now the HSE has finally accepted that there is a need for this facility in their area.

Matters were brought to a head when an inspection at the old hospital in July 2021 by the Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) found that the leaking roof, highlighted in a previous inspection, had caused extensive damage. Internal ceilings and walls in a number of resident areas were affected. 

It is understood that a new multimillion building will be a one-stop-shop for services like primary care, and community nursing, and an area containing 177 parking spaces. The site being proposed is understood to be within the environs of the town itself.

The AGM, which has been fixed for 7pm on Tuesday, May 23, is expected to receive an update on the progress of plans for the new facility and a questions and answers session will take place after the election of the new committee.
