It might feel like it’s a bit on the cool side for the month of May.

But according to Met Eireann, this is nothing compared to the national forecaster’s coolest May temperatures on record.

Met Eireann’s lowest shaded air temperature for May was recorded in Glenties on May 4, 1979. It was -5.6ºC. 

The highest shaded air temperature for May was 28.4ºC. This was recorded in Ardfert Liscahane, Kerry on May 31, 1997.

Donegal features again on records for May. The highest sustained 10-minute mean wind speed was 102km/h, recorded at Malin Head on May 23, 2011.

The highest single gust on record was recorded on Belmullet, County Mayo on the same day, when wind speed peaked at 144km/h.

Donegal also holds a third record, having the lowest total hours of sunshine for the month of May. The total of 80.9 hours of sunshine was recorded in Glenties and also in Belmullet, County Mayo in the month of May 1970.
