Fears about the increasing erosion problem along Inishowen's coasts were raised at Tuesday's meeting of the Inishowen Municipal District.

Lagg Beach in particular has seen dramatic erosion of its dunes over the last few years.

This popular area is home to some of the highest sand dunes in Europe but which are now at risk due to the continuing erosion that has been made worse by winter storms. An area once accessible by cars has now been completely wiped away.

There are increasing calls for immediate action to prevent the situation from deteriorating further.

Cllr Martin McDermott said he had previous raised concerns about the future of Ballyliffin, Lagg and other north Inishowen coasts and had urged Donegal County Council to contact the Office of Public Works (OPW) to see if anything was being done.

He added he was worried that there was no mention of it in the council's environment documentation at their meeting that day.

He was told a meeting had been requested with the OPW on the matter but officials had no update other than that.
