A woman who has pushed the boundaries in some of the most dangerous icy waters and remote locations in the world will sign copies of her book, Limitless, and give a talk this Saturday, in Dunfanaghy.
Open-water swimmer, Nuala Moore was born in Donegal but raised in Kerry, her mother was Bridget Mc Gowan from Killybegs, where so many of her relatives on both sides live.
Nuala has just penned her memoirs, Limitless, a beautiful book also sharing her journey with Anne Marie Ward from Dunfanaghy, the two pioneered so many swims in the extremes, including Anne Marie’s amazing journey across the North Channel from Ireland to Scotland.
Nuala is self-coached, develops her own training plans for tackling the ice, forging a path into pushing human limits without coaches, focusing on what she believes is possible for herself. Pain was and is part of her journey. She also pushes to become the best version of herself.
Nuala holds two Guinness World Records for extreme cold-water swimming – the first for her part in the first and only international relay team to swim from Russia to the USA across the Bering Strait, and the second for her pioneering cold-water swim in the notorious Drake Passage, the body of water between South America's Cape Horn, Chile and the South Shetland Islands of Antarctica.
She is the first swimmer in the world to swim from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean, the Drake passage, as well as being the first woman in the world to swim south of remote Cape Horn, Nuala is also the first Irish swimmer to complete 1000m at 0 degrees in 2013 and the third woman in the world to accomplish it.
Donegal holds a huge connection to her swims, as well as her book. The Round Ireland Swim with Henry O Donnell and the Rescue Units of the Sheephaven Sub Aqua Club and the many marine professionals, Nuala with her five teammates swam around the island of Ireland in 2006 which tallied over 56 days and 1,330km. This gruelling expedition of back-to-back immersions which included travelling up to 20-miles off-shore in 300m deep waters was undoubtedly one of the most courageous swims ever achieved in the world of open-water swimming.
Anne Marie Ward and Nuala were the only two Irish swimmers invited onto the Bering Strait Relay, to swim from Russia to the USA, the first and only international team to swim over six days in mountainous waves and freezing temperatures. This swim was awarded the World Performance of the Year and labelled the most dangerous open water swim in the world.
Nuala is a pioneer, a cold-water safety specialist, coach, mentor, and an incredible endurance swimmer who has pushed the boundaries for women in extreme sports. She is engaging, inspirational, motivational, and mostly unassuming – a normal person fighting the daily fight to be the best version of herself.
Nuala believes everyone is capable of greatness, whatever shape that might take. Limitless is her breathtaking memoir, detailing what goes through her mind when she’s in the water and how, when she returns home, she processes the fallout of pushing herself to the brink.
Nuala will be In Arnolds Hotel from 6.30pm-8.30pm where there will be a lovely talk about the round Ireland swim and the book signing will take place in McAuliffes Craft Shop from 3.30pm-5pm.
Everyone is welcome to both events.
