The slurry spreading deadline has been extended by a week.
The news was confirmed to ease pressure on farmers following an extremely wet summer.
The closed period for slurry spreading has been extended to October 8 from the original October 1 date.
Glenswilly-based Councillor Donal Kelly had been a strong voice for the extension of the deadline and has welcomed the announcement.
“I want to thank the Minister (Charlie McConalogue) for taking my concerns on board on behalf of the farmers, especially here in Donegal by adding this extra week to the deadline,” Councillor Kelly told Donegal Live.
“Should it be the case that a week is not enough I will be back onto the Minister looking for a extra extension but I have been assured that it's going to be monitored very closely to try assist farmers in the best way possible
It is recommended that slurry should not be spread 48 hours before or after rainfall - something that has made it a testing time for farmers across Donegal.
Councillor Kelly has also asked that the spreading dates for 2024 be brought forward. He wants counties, including Donegal, in Zone C, where slurry cannot be spread until February 1, to be given the same start dates as those in Zone B, where spreading is allowed from January 16.
