Funeral of crash victim Mary Whitters Borland on Wednesday

Tributes have been paid to Ms Whitters Borland who died following a road traffic accident on Friday morning

The funeral of Moville crash victim Mary Whitters Borland will take place on Wednesday.

Ms Whitters Borland, who was aged in her 50s, died when the car she was driving collided with a lorry on the R238 road on Friday morning.

Mother-of-two Ms Whitters Borland was pronounced deceased at the scene a short time after the crash, which occurred at around 8am.

Ms Whitters Borland, married to Mark with two sons, Kai and Killian, was a popular figure in the Moville area.

The Moville Sea Scouts paid tribute following the tragic collision.

“There are no words to describe the devastation we are feeling,” they said. “Mary has been involved in our group for a number of years with her husband Mark and their two boys, Killian and Kai. Kai is the first of our group to have come right through from Beavers to Ventures which is something Mary was thrilled about.

“Our heartfelt condolences go out to Mark, Killian and Kai and Mary’s mum, Jane. May they all find the strength to get through the days and years ahead.”

A funeral service will take place on Wednesday at 12 noon in Greenbank Presbyterian Church, Quigleys Point followed by private cremation.

Gardai are continuing to investigate the cause of the collision. The Muff-Moville road was closed to allow for an examination of the scene by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators.

A Garda spokesperson said: “Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have information regarding this incident, particularly any road users with camera footage who were travelling the Muff/Moville road at the time of the incident is asked to contact Buncrana Garda Station on 074 932 0540, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station.”

The lorry driver, a male in his 50s, was taken to hospital for assessment.
