Work on a new 110-bed community nursing unit in Letterkenny could begin next month.
HSE chiefs expect that the new facility will be completed and ready for use in 2026.
The €58.6 million development at Kilmacrennan Road will provide a mix of long and short-stay beds for rehabilitation and dementia care uses.
Councillor Ciaran Brogan sought an update on the project at a meeting of the Regional Health Forum West this week.
In a response, Joe Hoare, Assistant National Director, HSE Capital and Estates told Councillor Brogan that a public works contract for the construction of the facility will b awarded ‘in the coming weeks’.
Mr Hoare said it that works ‘will commence on site around the end of October 2023’.
He said: “HSE Board approval is in place and the closing out of any pre-contract clarifications is now well progressed. The programme for the works is approximately 28 months from contract award with an expected completion date for construction works in Q1 2026.”
Councillor Brogan said the news was to be welcomed. He said: “I would like to compliment everyone involved in this project over a long number of years and I know now it’s a matter of us dotting the i’s and crossing the t’s.”
