A total of 33 people are expected be made redundant at the Norwegian fishery Giant Mowi's base in Rinmore, near Fanad tomorrow, Monday, October 2.

Norwegian fishery giant Mowi is the world’s largest producer of Atlantic salmon.

In a statement, Mowi said: “Redeployment options had been offered to staff who worked in secondary production, to other aspects of operations within the company’s Donegal headquarters.

“Redundancy takes effect on October 2nd, with 33 staff impacted.”

The move comes as the company ends secondary fish processing in Ireland.

According to the Irish Independent, the firm decided to do this following a global review to streamline processing plants that are 'under capacity.'

The firm, which employed 265 people in Ireland before the cuts, had flagged difficulties at its Irish operations after warmer than normal sea temperatures impacted the amount of salmon fished in Ireland.

In January, Mowi said its Irish division harvested 500 tonnes of fish in the fourth quarter of 2022, down from 1,500 tonnes the previous year.
