Work to finally commence on Bundoran's new 42 social housing development

Work t finallysyart of new Bundoran's 42 Housing Units in East End

Work is finally expected to commence on the construction of 42 new social housing units at Gort na Gréine, Drumacrin in Bundoran's East End within the week. It had been initially anticipated that work would start in July, but the first sod should now be turned within the week.

Cllr Michael McMahon (SF), who confirmed the news told donegallive.ie that this is very welcome, as it had been delayed slightly longer, than had been initially anticipated, over the summer months, because of the Department of Housing.

“It was really important that everything was properly in order and I am delighted that the desperate need for social housing in Bundoran will finally start to be addressed,” he explained.

“The traffic management programme will be starting this week and next week to get everything into gear. There will be a letter drop and discussion with the residents.

“I wanted the houses to start because of the housing crisis in Bundoran, but I wanted to ensure that everything was properly managed and there will be when we meet with traffic management and Donegal County Council and the contractor,” added Cllr McMahon.

He also welcomed the fact that it would be a Donegal contractor, Glebe Builders, at the helm and that he had spoken with them on several occasions, in terms of a workable traffic management system in the East End, while housing works were progressing.

His understanding was that the build time would be around 18 months.

“I wanted what was best for the people of Bundoran, as well as those people who were already living in the area and I certainly expect a good traffic management flow in the area. That will not be easy, but I hope that it can all be ironed out and that nobody is impeded in any way.”

They were also examining the prospect “with conversations taking place” of an access route at the top of the new housing development, that would link over towards the cinema direction and Station Road of the town but this was still in the exploratory and negotiating stage.

Donegal County Council say that the construction of 42 social housing units will comprise of 20 two-bed apartments in 7, two storey blocks; 9 two bed 2 storey houses; 9 three-bed 2-storey houses, 3 four-Bed 2-storey houses; 1 six-bed (specially adapted) 2-storey house and all associated site development works including foul drain pumping station with rising main, stormwater attenuation system and controlled pedestrian crossing point.
