A woman in her 20s has been killed in a road traffic collision on the outskirts of Letterkenny.
The female pedestrian was struck by a vehicle on the N56 road at Illistrin.
Emergency services rushed to the scene of the collision, close to the Ballyare junction at Illistrin, just before 7pm.
The body of the deceased woman remains at the scene and the N56 road between Letterkenny and Kilmacrennan has been closed. The road will remain closed overnight into Saturday morning.
A technical examination of the scene will take place in the morning.
Divisions are in place and motorists are advised to avoid the area if possible. Large tailbacks of traffic built up and secondary roads in the area are said to be extremely busy.
A Garda spokesperson said: “Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward.
“Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling on the N56 in the Illistrin area between 6:00pm and 7:15pm this evening are asked to make this footage available to Gardaí.
“Anyone with any information is asked to contact Milford Garda station on 074 9153060, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda station.”
