A Donegal nurse based in Saudi Arabia who was diagnosed with two brain tumours has received some positive news.

Jordan Byrne, a native of Killybegs, was admitted to hospital for Meningitis treatment in early December and after an MRI, a CT scan and further tests, medics discovered the tumours.

However, the 25-year-old met with his neurologist and his medical team on Tuesday morning.

While doctors will closely monitor his situation on an ongoing basis, news that the tumour is benign has come as a major boost for his family.

“Our prayers have been answered and thank God,” his mother, Fiona, said from Saudi Arabia. “We are beyond relieved.

“Jordan was told after many reviews from different neurologists and radiologists that his tumour is benign. They want to keep a close eye on it, especially the one beside his optic nerve and he will be called for more MRIs but they don’t want to do anything to remove it just yet.”

Jordan was a talented athlete in his youth. Competing for Finn Valley AC, he took a silver medal in the race walk at the 2013 National Juvenile Championships.

A GoFundMe appeal raised almost €43,000. Fiona, who travelled to Saudi Arabia with her husband Aidan, has confirmed that any of the funds not used for medical expenses will be given to charities close to the Byrne family’s hearts.

“We want to thank people so much for their donations and support. Without it, we would not be able to be here in Saudi Arabia to support him through the meningitis and tumours.”
