Eight social housing units will replace the old fire station in Stranorlar.

On Monday, Donegal County Councillors will be asked to approve the carrying out of works regarding the demolition of the old fire station building.

In its place will go eight social housing units that will comprise four two-bedroom apartment and four one-bedroom apartments. The proposed development will also include a private residential courtyards, on street parking and all associated site works.

“I know my colleagues will support this decision which will then be sent to the Department for housing for permission to go to tender,” said Fianna Fáil Councillor Patrick McGowan.

“I am particularly delighted to see this much needed housing eventually come before the Council for granting part eight planning permission.

“This year will see quite a few housing developments come on stream ready for letting or at planning and contract stage.

“It is quite conceivable that current housing developments will see a massive turn around on the Council waiting lists this year and next year.

“Bear in mind every new council house that is let to a housing applicant frees up a private rented property which are equally in scarce and in high demand.”

At Trusk Road, Ballybofey 18 special social housing units for older people will be completed and let in June of this year.
