Gardai to carry out forensic examination of Ballybofey fire

The Donegal Fire Service brought the blaze under control.

A Garda forensics team will today carry out an investigation at the scene of a fire in Ballybofey.

The blaze broke out at an unoccupied house on Trusk Road on Monday night.

The Fire Service and An Garda Siochana responded to reports of the fire at around 9.30pm.

A section of the Trusk Road between Finn Park and SuperValu has been sealed off by gardai as firefighters from the Donegal Fire Service brought the blaze under control.

However, a spokesperson has confirmed to Donegal live that ‘extensive damage was caused to the property’.

“The scene is currently preserved for forensic and technical examinations,” a Garda spokesperson said. “Enquiries are ongoing.”

The property in question has been vacant for the best part of the last 20 years.

The house was owned by the late Francis and Mai Mulrine. The couple ran Mulrine’s Furniture & Carpets on nearby Navenny Street while Mai was a popular music teacher who taught from her house on Trusk Road.

Francis Mulrine passed away in February, 2004 while Mai Mulrine died in July, 2005.
