Work is expected to get underway at Donegal Community Hospital in the coming weeks.

Cathaoirleach of Donegal MD, Cllr Tom Conaghan (Ind) has been advocating for this work to be carried out.

Following Tuesday’s meeting of the Regional Health Forum which took place in Galway, he said: “I am pleased that the contractor will commence works on site at Donegal Town Community Hospital on March 5.

“The works will take time to complete as they are due to be carried out in phases with completion anticipated in November.

“These essential works will be a great upgrade for the excellent staff working  in the hospital in caring for the patients. This has been an ongoing project  that I have been working on at these meetings since September ‘23 and I’m delighted works will now begin soon.”

Donegal Community Hospital is situated on the outskirts of Donegal Town. The 29 bed facility has a mix of single, twin, and multi occupancy rooms. There are shared sitting and dining rooms, an oratory, and a treatment room, as well as an onsite kitchen and laundry.

Donegal Community Hospital provides palliative care, respite care, convalescence, rehabilitation and continuing care.

Following the HIQA inspections, Cllr Conaghan voiced his support for the excellent staff providing a high level of care to patients at the hospital on an ongoing basis. He has been calling on the HSE to bring the facility up to a standard which will allow them to do so in an environment which meets the needs of patients and staff.
