Glenties event to address ‘urgent issues facing Ireland’ with high-profile speakers

This year's MacGill Summer School will take place at the Highlands Hotel in July

The 44th annual MacGill Summer School in Glenties will see an array of politicians and academics discuss urgent issues facing Ireland. 

The speakers lined up are Taoiseach Simon Harris, TD, Fine Gael; Minister for the Environment Eamon Ryan, TD, Green Party; Deputy Pearse Doherty, TD, Sinn Féin, Spokesperson on Finance and Public Expenditure and Reform; Dr Tony Holohan, Director Centre One Health, UCD & Former Chief Medical Officer Ireland; Mark Little, Media Entrepreneur; Siún Ní Raghallaigh, Former Chair of RTÉ & Former Chair of TG4. 

Frances Fitzgerald MEP, Fine Gael & Vice-President of the EPP Group, European Parliament; Professor Ciaran Martin CB, University of Oxford & Founding CEO of the National Cyber Security Centre at GCHQ UKBrigadier Phil McKee, former Director-General of the New Zealand Security Intelligence Service; Professor Brigid Laffan, Chancellor of University of Limerick; and Professor Roja Fazaeli, Established Professor in Law and Islamic Studies, University of Galway.

The MacGill Summer School, in association with the University of Notre Dame, is Ireland’s international forum for thought leaders to discuss the critical issues facing Ireland, Europe and our world. It was founded over 40 years ago by Dr Joe Mulholland in the small town of Glenties and has grown from very modest beginnings to being one of the most important fora in Ireland for the analysis of topics of national and international interest.

This year's school will take place on July 18-20 and the theme is 'On the Brink'. The world finds itself at a number of tipping points in 2024, with war in Gaza and Ukraine; elections in the U.S. and UK, and the ongoing AI revolution. 

MacGill Summer School 2024 analyses the urgent issues facing Ireland and looks also for new ways to navigate these turbulent times with national and global experts from the worlds of politics, media, public health, security, intelligence, technology and neuroscience.

The talk is due to take place in MacGill Summer School, Glenties on July 19. The key topics up for discussion are: What if Trump wins?; Elections 2024: Ireland; Ireland needs immigration?; Beyond GDP: How should Ireland invest its billions?; Disease X: The next public health crisis; The art of negotiation; Future of media & public service broadcasting; Have we lost the run of ourselves?; Extremism, threats and espionage: Is Ireland ready?; Election integrity in an era of AI; Alternative Futures: The Neuroscience of Nation building.

MacGill Summer School 2024 is in association with the University of Notre Dame and is kindly supported by Donegal County Council.
