Sinn Féin’s Cllr Noel Jordan has been elected Cathaoirleach of the Municipal District (MD) of Donegal.

At the AGM on Friday, June 28, Cllr Jordan was proposed for the position by his party colleague. This was seconded by Cllr Niamh Kennedy (Ind). No other nominations were made, and Cllr Jordan took the chair for the remainder of the meeting.

He thanked those who had nominated and seconded him, and said: “It is an honour to be Cathaoirleach of this MD, and it is an honour that I don’t take lightly.

“I am looking forward to working with the new members in the chamber, Cllrs Manus Boyle and Jimmy Brogan, and also the returning councillors.

“I feel the last two terms of this MD was very, very successful and we worked will as a team here together. We were one of the most successful MDs because we achieved a lot in the last two terms.

“If we work well together, I feel we can move on and achieve a lot more.”

Cllr Jordan said he was looking forward to working with the directors and staff in Donegal MD, saying: “The door is always open if we want to raise any issues with them”

He congratulated Cllr Niamh Kennedy (Ind) on election to the role of Cathaoirleach of Donegal County Council, the first time since 2014 that the role has gone to a councillor from Donegal MD.

“It is very important that we have the Cathaoirleach of the county sitting here,” said Cllr Jordan.

He also thanked the media for their role in getting the message out from MD meetings.

Cllr Jordan proposed Cllr Micheál Naughton (FF) as Leas Cathaoirleach. This was seconded by Cllr McMahon.

Cllr Naughton wished Cllr Jordan all the best in his new role.

“This MD has achieved a lot and it is very important that we are all working together for the people of this MD, from Bundoran to Glencolmcille.

This was echoed by the four other councillors in the chamber and by Garry Martin, Director of Services with Donegal County Council, who said: “I am really looking forward to working with out and all the team over the next five years.”

Tributes were paid to outgoing Cathaoirleach, Tom Conaghan (Ind) who retired from politics, and to Barry Sweeny who served the MD in it’s last term.
