Ruby Druce from Castlefin now believed to be Ireland's oldest person

Ruby Druce celebrated her 108th birthday on New Year's Eve

Ruby Druce (108) from Castlefin is now understood to be Ireland’s oldest person.

The news comes following the sad passing of Phyllis Furness in Galway on Monday evening, after celebrating her 109th birthday on May 23 at Moycullen Nursing Home with her granddaughter Jackie Ord, who had travelled from Melbourne in Australia.

Gerontology Wiki states that Ruby is now the oldest person in Ireland, having been born on December 31, 1915.

Ruby got a surprise of a lifetime in May – a visit from Daniel O'Donnell, where she joined the west Donegal singer-songwriter for a rendition of 'The Homes of Donegal'.

Ruby celebrated her 108th birthday on New Year's Eve and receives a phone call every year on her birthday from Daniel.

Agnes Cornish from Wexford is listed as the second-oldest by Gerontology Wiki. She is also 108, having been born on May 27, 1916, while Sarah Coyle of Wicklow is third having been born on July 24, 1916.
