The Department of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that it is liaising with the family of a man from Donegal who was found dead in a Police cell in Portugal on Wednesday.

The 29-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday evening in the Albufeira area following an alleged incident.

The man, who is understood to be from the Letterkenny area, was found dead by Police officers.

Emergency services were called to the scene, but the man was pronounced dead. Foul play is not suspected.

A spokesperson said: "The Department of Foreign Affairs is aware of the case and is providing consular assistance.

“As with all consular cases, the Department does not comment on the detail of individual cases."
