Mary McAuliffe admits to a 'bittersweet' feeling at the forthcoming closure of McAuliffe's Craft Shop in Dunfanaghy.

The iconic craft shop will shut for the last time next month with the building being sold.

Mary, who is now 103, has seen the life and times of the popular business.

Three generations of the McAuliffe family, Jack and Mary, Anne (nee McAuliffe) and Conor MacNamara have worked to develop and innovate the business model and product offering. Now, after 40 fulfilling years in the business Anne is retiring and Conor is moving on to take up new opportunities outside the shop.

“I’ve been in business for most of my life and have seen the hard and the good times,” Mary says.

“Reflecting on the end of an era, my thoughts are bittersweet, while it’s sad to see the shop close, I’m very happy for Anne and Conor.

“I feel satisfied knowing the family have given the community good service, that makes me proud.”

The shop has served the needs of local people and visitors to the area for over 70 years, operating as a chemist, tweed and fashion shop and most recently as McAuliffe’s Craft Shop.

“Thanks to everyone for the wonderful memories and the unwavering support of our family business through the decades,” Conor says.

“We want to express our deep gratitude to our incredible team, in particular, Linda Hanlon who has been our anchor and a much loved member of staff for over twenty five years.”

Any customers with gift vouchers or credit notes are assured that they will be honoured, but people are asked to use these as soon as possible.
