Proposal for Bundoran playground to be called after the late Cllr Sean McEniff
A proposal has been put forward to name the playground in Bundoran after the late Cllr Sean McEniff.
The Bundoran councillor and member of the Fianna Fáil party died in April 2017 at the age of 81.
At the October meeting of the Municipal District (MD) of Donegal, fellow Bundoran man, Cllr Michael McMahon (SF) said it would be a worthy tribute.
He said: “Nothing was ever put up for Sean McEniff. “I am asking that we name the playpark beside Waterworld as Sean McEniff Park and that we put up a small plaque.
“He was 50 years a councillor and served the people very well. It is fitting that we put up something.”
The proposal was seconded by Cllr Micheál Naughton (FF). However, he raised a concern that calling the playground after Cllr McEniff might prevent anything further being named after him.
“Would that deter us from naming the link road after him?” he asked
Area Manager Housing and Corporate for Donegal MD Pauric Sheerin said: “I can’t honestly answer that but I will look into the protocol.
Obviously it is a consideration if there is a plan to name something else after the late councillor it might make more sense to wait but I don’t know if there are any rules.”
He added that some level of consultation with the family would be required.
Cllr McMahon said the McEniff family had made the request through him for the naming of the playground.
“That is their preferred choice,” he said. “It is a very prominent area beside Waterworld.”
Mr Sheerin said he would look into the matter.
Sean McEniff was elected to Bundoran Urban District Council in 1960 and remained a town councillor until it was disbanded in 2014. He also served as a county councillorfrom1967 to 1979 and again from 1985 until his death in 2017.
He was synonymous with the development of tourism in Bundoran and owned a number of hospitality businesses in the seaside town.
A motion was passed in Donegal County Council in 2018 for the late councillor’s contribution to public life to be honoured.
