Sadness in Donegal Town at death of ‘kind and generous’ Jack Keeney

There is much sadness in the Donegal Town area following the death of community stalwart Jack Keeney.

In the many tributes being paid to Jack, late of O’Maolchonaire Avenue, he is described as a true gentleman, kind, generous, a community man, a gentle soul, good-humoured and witty, a pleasure to work alongside.

Jack passed away on Sunday, January 12 at the age of 80.

He had worked in Magee’s factory for many years. A man of great faith, he was actively involved in the parish of Killymard, where he undertook a number of roles including many years on the Board of Management of Scoil an Linbh Íosa.

Jack was also a dedicated community volunteer, and was particularly well-known for years of dedicated service at the Donegal Town community facility, the St John Bosco Centre.

A spokesperson for the St John Bosco Centre took to social media on Sunday to pay tribute following news of Jack’s death.

“It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Jack Keeney earlier today,” said the spokesperson.

“Jack was a remarkable man and a true gentleman, cherished for his sharp wit, countless stories, and his kind and generous nature.

“As the longest-serving committee member of the St. John Bosco Centre, Jack’s dedication and contributions to our community were immeasurable. He will be greatly missed by everyone at the Centre and by the many whose lives he touched.

“May Jack’s gentle soul rest in peace.”

Many people have been adding their condolences to those expressed by the St John Bosco Centre committee on the organisation’s Facebook page.

While in his life Jack worked tirelessly for the betterment of the people in his community, he will be most deeply mourned and missed by those who knew and loved him best - his beloved family.

Jack is survived by his wife Margaret, sons Paul (Deirdre) and Barry, daughter Catriona (Tony), grandchildren Emma, Owen, Daragh, and Jenny, brothers Patrick and Martin, nephews, nieces, and his extended family.

Reposal of Jack's remains takes place at Tír Conaíll Funeral Home, Drumrooske, Donegal Town, F94 FX3A, on Monday from 2pm to 8pm

He will be laid to rest in Killymard graveyard following Requiem Mass on Tuesday, January 14.
