Donkey rescued after being dumped on side of dangerous Donegal road

Wilbur was rescued from the side of a dangerous road near Raphoe on Thursday night

A donkey dumped off at the roadside on a dangerous Donegal road has been rescued.

The full stallion was left off on a busy road outside Raphoe on Thursday night.

Workers from the Donegal Donkey Sanctuary, which is situated just three miles away from where a passing motorist came upon the donkey on the roadside, came to the aid of Wilbur.

Operators of the Donegal Donkey Sanctuary have described the incident as “shocking” and praised those involved in bringing Wilbur to safety.

“A motorist almost collided with poor Wilbur on a very dangerous stretch of road outside our local town of Raphoe,” they said.

“This section of road is notorious for bends and blind corners and has a very sharp drop down into a valley.

“It is a miracle that he was not hit which could have resulted in human fatality as well.

“While Wilbur is in pretty good physical shape his hooves are in need of care and beginning to cause him severe discomfort.”

The Donegal Donkey Sanctuary, who said they believe the animal was dumped and left fend for himself, hailed the intervention of a man who made a call to the sanctuary and another person who got Wilbur off the road until their team arrived.

“Just shocking and so close to the sanctuary,” they said.
