Members of the Letterkenny Chamber of Commerce before the 2024 St Patrick's Day parade
Plans to stage an Easter parade in Letterkenny in place of the cancelled St Patrick’s Day event have been shelved.
The Letterkenny Chamber of Commerce say that it is “not feasible” to stage an alternative event.
The St Patrick’s Day parade was called off as a mark of respect following a tragic road traffic collision in the town that saw lollipop man Anthony Gallagher lose his life.
Chamber members considered staging a replacement event at Easter. However, that will not now happen, it has been confirmed.
“The committee have reviewed all the cost and safety implications for both the business community and participants and decided that it is not feasible to proceed with an alternative Easter event,” Letterkenny Chamber of Commerce said in a statement.
“We understand the need to cancel this year's event was disappointing for everyone who had planned to take part, as well as the many volunteers, community groups, and organisers who had put so much work in behind the scenes.
“We’re incredibly grateful for your continued support—and we now look forward to the rest of this year’s events with renewed energy and community spirit.”
Mr Gallagher died in Letterkenny University Hospital due to injuries sustained when he was struck by a vehicle in the early hours of St Patrick’s Day at Lower Main Street - less than 100 yards from his home.
His brother, Martin Gallagher, also sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to Galway University Hospital. He continues to recover from his injuries.

A teenage male who was arrested and question was released without charge and a file will be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions and Garda Youth Diversion Bureau.
GSOC are also investigating as the driver of the vehicle had an earlier interaction with An Garda Síochána.
