Environmentalists are to gather in Moville on Saturday, May 17, with everyone welcome.
Environmentalists are set to come together in Moville for an uplifting and informative event on Saturday, May 17 to celebrate the 20th ‘Gathering’.
The theme for the St Eugene’s Hall event is: ‘From Colonisation to Community through the Rights of Nature’ and it will run from 10am until 5pm.
The Gathering is a grassroots collective, and community members, environmental groups, activists, and artists will join up to strengthen environmental action across the north and beyond. Registration is preferable but not essential.
Organiser say local governments throughout the north-west of Ireland have issued rights of nature declarations but have failed to integrate a rights of nature approach into their practice or policies.
At the Moville Gathering, attendees will be launching a new movement to recognise and implement rights of nature for the Foyle catchment.
The event will begin with the ‘Meeting of the Waters’, a ceremony at which water protectors from across the island will represent their water bodies as ambassadors. Attendees are encouraged to bring water from their local water bodies, from streams, to loughs, to holy wells, and to commit themselves as ambassadors who will speak up for the health of our waters and ecosystems.

The event will feature a presentation from the Atrato River Guardians of Colombia, who have been appointed as advocates and caretakers of their waterway. They will speak of their experiences, including the challenges of bringing a rights of nature approach into practice.
Other speakers include Eamon McCann and representatives from Save our Sperrins, Save Inishowen from Mining, the Rivers Trust and local fishermen. Music and poetry will be integrated in the programme, including a performance from the Inishowen Harp Ensemble and the Henry Girls. A light lunch will be served.
The day will end with a discussion on pathways for advancing the rights of nature for the Foyle system.
