Donegal Mountain Rescue Team (DMRT) faced a challenging callout when they came to the assistance of an injured hillwalker 600m up Errigal. 

The hillwalker had sustained a lower leg injury after a fall on Saturday afternoon, August 16. 

A spokesperson for DMRT said: “At 16:57, we received a call from An Garda Síochána regarding an individual who had suffered a fall resulting in a lower leg injury on Errigal Mountain.

The team call out coordinators utilised the PhoneFind system to precisely locate the casualty. The location data was received by 17:01, allowing for an immediate and efficient response.”

A full team call-out was initiated, and 12 DMRT members began to arrive at the RV. The hasty team reached the casualty at approximately 18:51, confirming the lower leg injury and commencing initial treatment by immobilising the affected limb.

Once stabilised, the team undertook the challenging process of transporting the casualty from the 600-metre contour line down to the car park at Errigal,” continued the spokesperson. “The handover to National Ambulance Service paramedics occurred at 21:20. The casualty was subsequently transported to Letterkenny for further medical treatment. 

“We stood down at 22:30. We wish the casualty a speedy recovery.”
