Father Ailbe O’Murchu, OFM
As thousands of runners get ready to take on the Dublin Marathon this Sunday, a Franciscan priest is marking another milestone with a fundraising drive for the renovation of the St. Francis of Assisi Retreat Center in Rossnowlagh.
Father Ailbe O’Murchu, OFM, based at the St Francis of Assisi Retreat Centre in Rossnowlagh, holds a unique place in Irish marathon history.
Between 1980 and 2010, he completed 30 consecutive Dublin Marathons - a record that made him the only priest in Ireland to achieve the feat.
Long before marathon running became a common pursuit, Fr Ailbe was already pounding the pavements of Dublin, his Franciscan robes replaced each October by running shoes.
Now celebrating 50 years in the Franciscan Order, Fr Ailbe continues to inspire those who visit the retreat centre.
The community is marking his Golden Jubilee by inviting support for the renovation of the St Francis of Assisi Retreat Centre.
Donations can be made by cheque, payable to Franciscan Friary, and sent to: Franciscan Friary, Rossnowlagh, F94 PH21, County Donegal, Ireland.
“As I look back on 50 years as a Franciscan priest, running the Dublin Marathon each year became a kind of prayer in motion,” Father Ailbe said.
“Every mile was a chance to give thanks - for health, for friendship, and for the gift of serving others.”

Born and raised in Ireland, Fr Ailbe spent decades as a college professor in Gormanston before moving to Rossnowlagh, where his ministry and presence have become deeply woven into the local community.
The Franciscan Order (Order of Friars Minor) was founded by St. Francis of Assisi in the 13th century and is dedicated to living out the Gospel through service, simplicity, and compassion. Franciscans continue to serve communities across Ireland and the world through education, parish ministry, social outreach, and care for creation.
