The Rathdonnell-Sockar Group Water Scheme in Letterkenny and Rutland Island (Inish Mhic an Dóirn) Group Water Scheme have been allocated €4.3 million under the Multi-Annual Rural Water Programme (MARWP) 2024–2026.
Rutland Island Group Water Scheme will receive €2,985,619, while €1,364,213 is being invested in the Rathdonnell-Sockar Group Water Scheme.
The funding will support the ‘taking in charge’ of Group Water Schemes (GWSs), transferring responsibility for water services to Donegal County Council and ensuring long-term security, regulatory compliance and service resilience for the local communities.

Welcoming the announcement made by the Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, James Browne, Donegal Minister of State, Charlie McConalogue said: “This is excellent news for the residents of both areas. This allocation is about providing peace of mind and ensuring that every household has access to a secure, high-quality water supply.
“Maintaining and improving rural connectivity and services is a main priority of government. By bringing this scheme under public authority control, we are futureproofing our water supply, supporting local development, and protecting the environment for generations to come.
“This welcome and much-needed investment in the Rathdonnell-Sockar Group Water Scheme and in the Rutland Island Group Water Scheme will directly benefit hundreds of households, improve water quality, and reduce leakage. It will also ensure that the communities have access to safe, reliable, and sustainable water services."
