Tributes paid to 'gentle, well-liked' woman who died after Letterkenny road collision

Tributes have been paid to Sadia Hussain Afzal who passed away at Letterkenny University Hospital on after being involved in a road traffic collision and her family are making arrangements to have her remains repatriated to her native Pakistan for burial

Sadia Hussain Afzal, who died as a result of injuries sustained in a road traffic collision in Letterkenny last Friday, has been remembered as someone who left a positive impression wherever she went.

Ms Afzal, who was in her 40s, passed away at Letterkenny University Hospital on Sunday, April 5.

Her heartbroken family are now making arrangements to have her remains repatriated to her native Pakistan for burial.

Ms Afzal, a pedestrian, was struck by a lorry shortly after 3pm on Friday, April 3, Station Roundabout, Letterkenny.

Thoiba Ahmed, who stood as an independent candidate in the 2019 and 2024 Local Elections in the Letterkenny-Milford Municipal District, paid tribute to the late Ms Afzal.

“She was a gentle, well‑liked woman in the community; soft‑spoken, respectful, and always warm in her interactions,” Ms Ahmed told Donegal Live. 

“People who knew her speak of her kindness and the calm way she carried herself.  

“Her loss has really shaken people here. She was someone who left a positive impression wherever she went, and the news has been heartbreaking for many.”

Letterkenny-based Sinn Féin Councillor Gerry McMonagle said the incident has been a “terrible tragedy” for Ms Afzal’s family. 

“All our thoughts and prayers are with them at this sad time,” Councillor McMonagle said. “It reminds us all of the need to be vigilant and careful on our roads whether as pedestrians or motorists, May Sadia rest in peace.”

Gardai continue to appeal for witnesses to the tragic incident to come forward.

A Garda spokesperson said: “Road users who may have camera footage, including dash-cam footage and were travelling in the area between 2.15pm and 3.15pm on Friday 3rd April 2026 are asked to make this available to investigating Gardaí.

“Anyone with information is asked to contact Letterkenny Garda Station on (074) 916 7100, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station.”
