Councillors in the Letterkenny-Milford Municipal District paused for a minute’s silence today in honour of the late music icon Moya Brennan.

Moya, a renowned Grammy-winning vocalist and harpist, sadly passed away on Monday following a short illness.

As communities across Gweedore, Donegal and the international music world mourn her passing, members of Donegal County Council are also acknowledging her impact on the county.

Mayor of Letterkenny Ciaran Brogan said news of Moya’s death came as a great shock.

He hailed Moya as a great ambassador for Donegal, having been named Donegal Person of the Year and awarded the Freedom of the County.

Cllr Brogan reflected on the close working relationship he enjoyed with Moya during the organisation of the Together for Creeslough concert in 2023, which she supported wholeheartedly in solidarity with the people affected by the 2022 Creeslough explosion.

“She was a lovely person, inside and out. Even though she was very successful, she was a very down-to-earth person,” Cllr Brogan said.

Cllr Brogan said the council’s thoughts and prayers are with Moya’s husband, family and wider music family.

The Donegal Age Friendly Programme was also honoured to have Moya Brennan as Donegal’s Age Friendly Ambassador. Her personal endorsement significantly benefited the promotion of the programme.

Director of Services Eamonn Browne said Moya was a positive promoter of age-friendly activities, infrastructure and the work being carried out.

He said the Age Friendly Committee was an inter-agency committee and that it was clear how much members held Moya and her family in great esteem.

“She will be a big loss to the committee,” said Mr Browne.“She was so happy to do so much and give something back to Donegal.”

Moya Brennan will be laid to rest in her native Gweedore this Friday, following a Funeral Mass at St Patrick's Church, Meenaweal, Crolly.
