Shock and sadness at untimely death of renowned Donegal weaver

The crafting community and wider public pay tribute

Clare O Presco

Clare O Presco created her own colourful, vibrant tweed using traditional Donegal methods

There is much sadness among the wider Donegal Town community at the death of talented weaver Clare O Presco.

Clare had a studio /workshop at the Craft Village in Donegal Town where she used her traditional 100-year-old loom to weave beautiful tweed in vibrant colours that gave her work a unique style and personality.

Her products were popular with visitors and locals alike. Everyone enjoyed a visit to Clare’s workshop where she was always delighted to share her passion for weaving.

Those lucky enough to own her creations - including home furnishings, bags, scarves, her adorable tweed frogs, and many other items - will no doubt treasure them even more now.

A native of Wivenhoe in Essex, UK, Clare moved to Donegal after graduation with a BA (Hons) in Woven Textile Design from the The Surrey Institute of Art and Design University College. She came to the area to fulfil her desire to create a modern version of Donegal tweed using traditional methods and local yarns. She certainly achieved her goal, adding her own distinctive chapter to Donegal's ongoing handweaving story.

Clare loved to ‘paint with wool,’ using hand carded fleece and blending wool fibres by hand to create the unique range of colours in her original tapestries.

In a statement issued via social media, a spokesperson for Donegal Craft village announced her untimely death over the weekend, saying: “It's with a heavy and broken heart that we regret to inform the passing of our dear friend Clare O Presco, colourful weaver of stories.

“Clare has been an integral part of our craft village for over 17 years and we are all heartbroken.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to Craig and her family. May Clare rest in peace and know she will always have a special place In our hearts.”

Tributes have been pouring in on social media from fellow crafters, her many friends in Donegal, and from the countless visitors who have very special memories of their trip to Donegal Craft Village and the time spent in Clare’s workshop.

Funeral arrangements were not available at time of going to print.
