Eir appeals decision to refuse planning for Fintown communications mast

Proposed mast ruled to be ‘overbearing and incongruous’

A decision to refuse planning permission for a replacement communications mast in an area designated as high scenic amenity has been appealed.

Donegal County Council refused planning permission for the replacement of a 20-metre high telecommunications structure with a 24-metre lattice telecommunications structure at the Eir Exchange, Drumaneany, Fintown.

Planning permission was sought to erect a replacement mast on a regional road between Doochary and Fintown where there is an existing exchange building.

Eircom Limited, trading as Eir, has appealed the decision to An Bord Pleanála.

The site is on land that has been designated as high scenic amenity in the Donegal county development plan.  No objections were lodged to the application.

Planners ruled that the height and form of the replacement mast would be "an overbearing and incongruous structure" in an area that consists mostly of residential properties.

The council said the granting of planning permission would be injurious to the visual amenity and character of the rural area and would set an undesirable precedent for similar developments.

A decision on the appeal is due in June.
