The repair of 12 run-down or unused buildings in Ramelton has been nominated for an architecture award
Three architectural projects in Donegal have been nominated for the Royal Institute of the Architects of Ireland Public Choice Award 2022.
The Killybegs Regeneration Strategy and Action Plan and the refurbishment and extension of a Rathmullan cottage, both by Rathmullan-based firm Pasparakis Friel, have been nominated for the awards along with the Ramelton Castle Street Historic Towns Initiative by Moville-based Dedalus Architecture.
The Killybegs Regeneration Strategy and Action Plan proposes 11 projects across the town centre including enhancements to the town centre, a river walk and a boardwalk along the coast.
The project also includes a weighbridge coffee house, reuse of part of the striking Auction Hall building as a craft beer brewery, the enhancement of the northern arrival to the town through a Welcome Quarter and a grand staircase to St Mary’s Church.
The Ramelton initiative involved the Ramelton Georgian Society and Donegal County Council. The project involved the repair of 12 run-down or unused buildings in and around Castle Street to improve the appearance of the historic town.
The Saltpans Cottage in Rathmullan
The Saltpans Cottage has been restored on a site that has a collection of buildings and the remnants of formal landscaped gardens. The new extension has been built within a courtyard.
The RIAI Architecture Awards celebrate quality design and the contribution made by architecture.
Following an open call the 31 projects on the shortlist were selected by the jury from anonymous entries. The winners will be announced on June 23 and votes can be cast here.
