Eight of the ten locations surveyed in Letterkenny achieved grade A rankings
Letterkenny has been ranked second in the Irish Business Against Litter rankings, its highest ever position in the ratings.
The survey of 40 towns and cities saw Letterkenny deemed “cleaner than European norms”.
Two-thirds of the 40 towns and cities surveyed were found to be clean, among them Naas, which retained its position atop the rankings, ahead of Letterkenny and Cavan.
Eight of the ten locations surveyed in Letterkenny achieved grade A rankings: Letterkenny Retail Park, Letterkenny Bus Éireann Station, R245 Ramelton approach road, N56 Dunfanaghy approach road, Letterkenny University Hospital, The Bernard McGlinchey Town Park, Ashbrook and Upper Main Street.
The An Taisce report for Letterkenny stated that the town had many top-ranking sites. Letterkenny University Hospital, which had been a littered site in previous surveys – received a top litter grade.
Letterkenny Retail Park was described as a very freshly presented and maintained environment and the town’s bus station was also mentioned as a top-ranking site.
An Taisce said Bernard McGlinchey Town Park wasn’t just beautifully presented and maintained – it was spotless throughout.
Glencar approach road received a B+ grade. An Taisce said the route just missed getting the top litter grade adding that plastic bottles, fast-food wrappers, sweet papers and plastic bags took away from an otherwise well-presented environment.
The recycle bank at the town’s Public Services Centre was given a grade B. An Taisce said large signage indicating ‘7 steps to reduce our waste & make Letterkenny, a cleaner, green town’, presented well, but pointed out that it was behind the bottle units, with the majority of the text obscured by the bins.
The area also contained litter including broken glass, sweet papers, plastic bags, broken crockery and face masks.
