Daniel O'Donnell says a live chat account in his name is fake

Singer Daniel O'Donnell has brought a fake account to the attention of his countless fans, warning them not to engage with the live chat.

The fake account is called 'Daniel O'Donnell Live Chat' but the singer is stressing that it is nothing to do with the real Daniel.

He took his official Facebook page to post a screenshot of the account and to say: "Just to remind people not to engage in conversation with this page as it's a fake account pretending to be a live chat."

Fans were quick to thank the singer, with some saying that they or someone they knew had believed it to be a real live chat page.

It is also evident from the responses that similar pages have been set up for other singers, so this really is a widespread issue that is taking advantage of the dedication of fans.

In the case of the fake Daniel O'Donnell account, a symbol resembling a social media account verification tick is used as a profile picture, making it particularly misleading. However, this is not how Facebook display verified accounts.

A verified Facebook account has a small white tick in a blue circle after the name of the person or organisation.

Fake social media accounts are designed by fraudsters and scammers to get you to click into them. Once a person engages with the account, the scammers can gain access to personal information and can also reach the account holder's friends and contacts. They may also attempt to trick the unsuspecting account holder into giving them money.

The online world really can be a minefield, so it is important to proceed with caution, especially when handing over personal information and card or bank details.
