When he takes up his new posting as the Bishop of Ossory next month, Fr Niall Coll will take with him a treasured present from the Raphoe Diocese.
Fr Coll met with the Bishop of Raphoe, Alan McGuckian SJ, and a large number of priests from the Diocese for a lunch on Friday.
Bishop McGuckian made a special presentation on behalf of the Diocese.
Fr Coll received a pectoral cross, which was presented to the former Bishop of Raphoe, the late Seamus Hegarty, in 2000 to mark the Jubilee Year.
The pectoral cross was given to Bishop Hegarty by the since-canonised Pope John Paul II.
Fr Coll, a native of St Johnston who is the Parish Priest of Tawnawilly, will be ordained Bishop of Ossory on January 22nd.
On the announcement of his selection, by Pope Francis, as the next Bishop of Ossory, Fr Coll paid tribute to his fellow clergy in the Raphoe Diocese.
He said: “I would like to thank Bishop Alan McGuckian, the priests and so many other lay faithful of the Raphoe Diocese for their support and kindness.”
